Pauline van Dongen – PHOTOTROPE

A new design has come to life: Phototrope

Phototrope enhances our ability to respond to the change of light surrounding us at nighttime. This illuminated running shirt incorporates LED ribbons, which are hidden behind soft and flexible TPU foils. Through their prismatic structure they refract the light of the LED’s in a vibrant and subtly multi-coloured way. The design casts the body in a shimmering glow; its illuminating qualities contribute to the experience and awareness of the space around the body and enhances experience on a psychological and aesthetic level. When worn during the day, the foils add a new and distinct look and materiality to the domain of sportswear.

Special thanks to our long term collaborator Hammond Images for making yet another blissful video and to Schoeller Textiles for providing us with amazing textiles.

There couldn’t be a more suitable event to introduce our new illuminated running shirt Phototrope. During the Nike Women’s Run, our team of five expert runners brightened up the dark streets of Amsterdam during a 10k race organized at nighttime. The team didn’t go unnoticed and got cheered at along the way by the crowd as well as fellow runners who got excited by the design.
As a frequent runner herself, Pauline, got frustrated to wear an illuminated armband or to see people wear those flashy reflective vests. As a designer, blending technology and fashion in a desirable way, she felt the need to create something better: a shirt that increases your visibility at nighttime while also creating a cool and distinct look that motivates you to perform even better!
